Open Call 2018: The Korean Cultural Centre UK and SPACE Studio Award

SPACE is pleased to announce an annual studio award in partnership with The Korean Cultural Centre UK (KCCUK)  launching in September 2017 for artists of Korean origin. The bursary programme is designed to support one artist graduating from an art college in the UK and offers him/her time and space to develop his/her practice for 12 months at a crucial period after graduation. Taking the form of free studio provision for one year, alongside supporting their visa (living expense and production cost not included), the bursary also provides a supportive environment, which includes professional development as part of the Artist Development Programme at SPACE. Becoming part of the wider artist community at SPACE, the awarded artist will have the chance to expand their creative artistic expression and communication into various forms, as well as to present their practice in the UK art scene through a solo exhibition at the KCCUK. The bursary artist will be selected by a jury panel organised by the KCCUK and SPACE.

About the Korean Cultural Centre UK

Since 2008, KCCUK has been promoting Korea’s vibrant cultural scene to UK audiences. KCCUK holds exhibitions across the visual arts, dance, music and design fields, alongside an education programme that seeks to develop knowledge of Korean heritage, history and culture. In 2008 the Korean Cultural Centre UK (KCCUK) was opened by the 'Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism', under the jurisdiction of the 'Embassy of the Republic of Korea' London, a governmental body.

The role of the Korean Cultural Centre in London is to enhance friendship, amity and understanding between Korea and the UK through cultural and educational activities. This includes staging an array of exhibitions, performances and events, as well as liaising with the Korean Embassy in the UK and collaborating on external projects with the British Council in Korea.

KCCUK has a visual arts programme curated by Je Yun Moon, presenting solo and group exhibitions from Korean artists. Exhibitions are often presented in collaboration with arts institutions in the UK and Korea. In recent years, KCCUK’s visual arts department has worked in an increasingly collaborative way to present exhibitions in conjunction with other UK institutions such as Ikon, Whitechapel Gallery, Art Night London, fig-2 and the ICA. By acting as a platform for collaboration, KCCUK aims to exhibit and introduce some of the most exciting Korean artists to wider audiences.

Since 2014, KCCUK has produced an ‘Artist of the Year’ exhibition, showcasing the work of a Korean artist who has made significant impact on the contemporary art world. Previous exhibitions have included Koo Jeong A (2016), Sora Kim (2015) and Lee Bul (2014). KCCUK also holds an annual open call, providing support for a younger Korean artist to be part of leading residency programmes in the UK and the opportunity to exhibit in KCCUK’s gallery space.
